Meet Our Staff

Matthew McSherry

Matthew McSherry was born in Far Rockaway, New York. He graduated from State University of New York at Albany in May 1984 with a B.S. Degree in Accounting. He became a CPA in New York in 1986. He is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants; American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; and the Cortland Rotary Club. Mr. McSherry
has spoken to many Professional and Civic groups on various accounting and tax topics, including serving as an accounting instructor in SUNY Cortland Center for Lifelong Learning AMA program.

Presently, he is a member of the board of directors of the Dryden Mutual Insurance Company, and
a Trustee of Tompkins-Cortland Community College. In addition, he has previously been a board member of Catholic Charities, the St. Mary’s School Advisory Board, the Cortland Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the Cortland Rotary Club.

Mr. McSherry is presently a partner in Port, Kashdin & McSherry, CPA’s with offices in Cortland and Syracuse. Mr. McSherry is married and has four children.

Deborah Hayden

Deborah Hayden was born and raised in Cincinnatus, New York. She graduated from Binghamton University in May 2000 with a B.S. Degree in Accounting. Debbie became a CPA in New York in May 2003 and is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Debbie has been with Port, Kashdin & McSherry since September 2000, and became partner in January 2023. Professionally she has provided accounting, taxation, audit and attestation services to individuals, corporations, school districts, BOCES Consortiums, churches, courts, farms, not-for-profit organizations, and insurance companies. She has specialized in not-for-profit and governmental accounting, specifically Single Audit and Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
reporting.

Debbie is a June 2004 graduate of the Leadership Cortland program and serves as a treasurer on the Cortland County IDA/BDC and board member of the Homer Education Foundation. She is a past chair of the Cortland Chamber of Commerce and past treasurer for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cortland County boards. She currently resides in Preble, New York.

Christopher Guay

Christopher Guay was born and raised in Harrisville, RI. He graduated from Providence College in May 1991 with a B.S. Degree in Accounting. In May 2006, Chris graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with an MBA in accounting. Chris became a CPA in Maryland in November 2006 and in New York in November 2014. He is a member of the Maryland Society of Certified
Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants with a pending membership to the New York Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Chris worked for several firms in the Baltimore-DC corridor and began with Port, Kashdin & McSherry in November 2022. Professionally he has provided accounting, taxation, audit and attestation services to individuals, corporations, not-for-profit organizations, defined contribution plans, wholesale distribution, construction, school districts, youth sports organizations, veterinary practices and churches. He has specialized in attestation engagements in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors and has extensive experience with combined financial statements, consolidated financial statements and OCBOA financial statements.

Chris serves as president of the Homer Athletics Booster Club and has previously served as treasurer for the Cortland County Youth Soccer Association. Chris has coached soccer at the collegiate and high school levels and lives with his wife and four children in Homer, NY.

Brandon Young

Brandon Young was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. and M.S. in Accounting.

Brandon interned with Louis T. Roth & Company, L.L.P. in Louisville, Kentucky for the 2018 tax season. He undertook the preparation of S-Corporations, Partnerships, and Individual tax returns.

Brandon moved to Ithaca, New York in July of 2019. He worked for Insero & Company where he worked on auditing and attestation engagements of various governmental entities including towns, cities, counties, school districts, and BOCES Consortiums. During the tax season of 2020, he assisted the firm’s tax department where he focused solely on preparing individual returns.

Brandon joined in November of 2020 and became a CPA in New York State in July, 2022.
